A clear agreement.

1. The present service and its history

BYTE began in March 1996. Approximately 1,242,034 historical records are reported by BYTE. These terms govern accounts and allocations through the current service. Its live allocation count separately records entries confirmed by the payment and identity verification process.

2. Your account and identity

You must be at least 18 and legally able to enter this agreement. Use your own identity and contribute only information you have the right to provide. Passkeys protect account access. Keep your device and backup sign-in methods secure; a certificate alone cannot sign you in. An allocation requires document and selfie verification through Stripe Identity. The service blocks reuse of the same verified document across accounts; it does not claim universal unique-human identification. Incomplete, inconsistent, or unverifiable checks prevent checkout.

3. The $1.00 allocation

The current price is exactly $1.00 USD for one personal allocation, paid once through Stripe’s hosted checkout. There is no recurring charge in this allocation flow. An allocation is issued only after independent server confirmation of successful payment and capacity. A pending checkout is not a completed allocation. Your signed certificate confirms the current registry entry; it is not a financial asset, a storage capacity guarantee, a promise of future technology, or evidence of a historical membership. Your card issuer may apply its own currency conversion charges.

An allocation is personal and non-transferable. Speculative selling, brokerage, or attempted transfer breaches these terms and may result in suspension or termination, subject to applicable law. No third party is authorized to sell or transfer allocations. Nothing here excludes mandatory consumer rights, including any refund or cancellation rights that apply to you.

4. Files, consent, and access

You decide whether to contribute text, audio, or genomic records. Do not upload another person’s genetic data, private correspondence, or recordings without the rights and consent needed to do so. File types and size limits are shown in the archive. An allocation does not purchase unlimited storage. The archive offers authenticated access and removal of supported files; the privacy notice explains processing and retention. The service must not be used for unlawful material or to compromise another person’s privacy or security.

5. Technical and scientific limits

Preserving information does not preserve subjective consciousness. Behavioral or genomic replication is not a demonstrated transfer of consciousness. Future neural synthesis, revival, uninterrupted availability, and perpetual preservation are not guaranteed. Current file storage is not represented as an air-gapped, geographically redundant archive unless verified operational documentation is separately published. Keep your own copies of important material.

Where enabled, a persona response is generated by a configured model using the information supplied to it. It may be wrong, incomplete, or unrepresentative. It is not the original person, professional advice, or evidence of conscious continuity. You choose whether to invoke this processing.

6. Changes, concerns, and service limits

The service may be unavailable during maintenance, provider outages, or verification review. Updated terms are identified by version; acceptance is recorded for the terms governing an allocation. Any additional published documents will be identified separately and will not silently replace this agreement. Questions about a payment can be raised using the merchant contact shown on your Stripe receipt. Rights provided by applicable law remain in force.

7. Voluntary donations

Donations support BYTE’s operation and development. Each donation is a one-time payment of the amount you choose in USD. A donation does not reserve an allocation, increase storage, or purchase priority access. Giving does not require a BYTE account or the allocation identity-verification process. Your payment is confirmed through Stripe before the service records it as paid.

The service does not represent donations as tax-deductible or issue charitable tax receipts. Your bank may apply currency-conversion charges. Contact the operator about payment errors or refund requests; applicable consumer rights remain in force. The privacy notice explains anonymous giving and payment processing.
